Special Tests shown to have high diagnostic accuracy are presented by region of the body and by specific diagnoses.

KEYNOTE: Spinal and Peripheral Manipulation

Chris Greetham PT, MCSP, COMT

Chris Greetham, Cyriax trained (United Kingdom) will present a brief history of manipulation and where we are today. Specific indications, contraindications and precautions are discussed for the safe use of manipulation. Mechanical and Neurophysiological effects are explored. Clinical Reasoning (CR) is the foundation to effective clinical practice and is the cornerstone of the Maitland-Australian approach. Vincent (South Australia trained) and Darren (Western Australia trained) will present CR in a clear and thought provoking manner. Vertical/Lateral and inductive/deductive reasoning processes will be demystified and evaluated. The role of various input data such as EBM, palpation, subjective questioning and clinical hypothesis formation and modification will be explored. The ability to use CR in assessment and treatment is an absolutely critical component to practicing the Maitland approach effectively.

Vertebro-Basilar Insufficiency (VBI) Update

Jody Musick DPT, OCS, COMT, FAAOMPT

Dr. Musick (Tennessee) will present the history of VBI assessment and the latest Australian guidelines for VBI assessment. The guidelines will be discussed in the context of subjective questioning and physical examination procedures used. Emphasis will be placed on anatomy, EBM research, and current guidelines for the testing of patients prior to many cervical spine interventions, not just manipulation.

Original Research: VBI Utilization Survey

Ken Learman PT, PhD, OCS, COMT, FAAOMPT

Dr. Learman (Youngstown State University) will present his original research for the first time at the Symposium. The paper presents the results of a survey instrument used at MAPS MT-2 Basic Spinal Seminars in 2008-2009. The survey explores the attitudes, beliefs, and utilization rates of VBI testing prior to cervical interventions as reported by US Licensed Physical Therapists.

Friday 4/9/10 Afternoon Session EBM and Clinical Reasoning

Chris Showalter PT, OCS, COMT, FAAOMPT

MAPS Clinical Director (Melbourne trained) will present the 3 core principles of EBM as first described by David Sackett and illustrate how Clinical Reasoning is a fundamental component of evidenced based practice as it relates to both assessment and intervention.

Current Pain Theory

Bryan O'Halloran PT, OCS, SCS, COMT

Bryan (Melbourne trained) will present the current theory of pain perception and processing. Pain perception will be discussed in terms of Input (Peripheral Nociceptive and Peripheral Neurogenic). Further discussion will explain Altered Processing (Centrally Evoked and Cognitive and Affective influences) and the effects pain perception has on Output including Motor, Autonomic, Neuroendocrine and Neuroimmune responses. Manual therapy interventions will be presented in a new light in terms of how they potentially effect pain perception and processing.

Original Research: Cervical Biomechanics Survey

Ken Learman PT, PhD, OCS, COMT, FAAOMPT

Dr. Learman (Youngstown State University) will present his original research for the first time at the Symposium. The paper presents the results of a survey instrument used at MAPS MT-1 Basic Peripheral Seminars in 2008-2009. The survey explores the attitudes, beliefs, and theoretical intersegmental movements of different portions of the Cervical spine as reported by US Licensed Physical Therapists.

Cevicogenic Headaches
