Press Release
July 15, 2011
RE: Expired MAPS COMT Certification
Dear COMT Graduate,
This letter is to notify you that your COMT Certification expired on July 1, 2011.
However, due to numerous requests, we have implemented a Courtesy Grace Period, extending the Re-Certification Application deadline to August 15, 2011. To take advantage of this extension, please see the attached Re-Certification Application and instructions detailed below.
If you feel that you have received this letter in error, or if you are on active military duty, please notify MAPS immediately.
How Do I Take Advantage of the Re-Certification Under The Courtesy Grace Period?
You MUST file your Re-Certification application NO LATER THAN AUGUST 15, 2011, under either the Standard Re-Certification requirements or under the Courtesy Grace Period program (Option A or B) listed below. If you opt for the Courtesy Grace Period program, you must submit proof of completion of either Option A or B to MAPS no later than October 31, 2011. The two continuing education options you have under the Courtesy Grace Period program are:
- Option A: Register and attend the MAPS 2011 Symposium to be held in Chicago on October 21-23, 2011.
OR
- Option B: Register and complete two continuing education activities from Group II, by October 23, 2011.
NOTE: Proof of registration or enrollment is required with your Re-Certification application under both Option A and Option B.
Upon submission of your Re-Certification application by August 15, 2011 your COMT status will be converted to "Pending" until October 31, 2011, or until we receive evidence of completion of Option A or B, whichever is sooner. If you do NOT Re-Certifyby August 15, 2011 your COMT will be removed, and you will no longer be able to use the COMT designation as part of your professional credentials.
Can I Reinstate My COMT After August 15, 2011?
Yes. However, you would have to file a new COMT Candidate Application to sit both components of the COMT Exam (OSCE and written). In order to qualify to sit the exams, you must have completed all the following courses: MT-1, MT-2, MT-3, MT-4, MT-O, and MT-ST, and pay the $925 registration fee.
If you have not taken MT-O or MT-ST, you would need to complete BOTH courses prior to sitting the COMT Exams.
What's Required for COMT Re-Certification?
- Maintain at least Part-Time (10 hours per week) clinical practice pertaining to patient care
- Agree to continue to abide by the Code of Ethics of the APTA.
- Send a completed Re-certification application to MAPS no later than August 15, 2011
- Complete the standard Required Continuing Education Activities (see below) or those described in
- the Courtesy Grace Period program (see Option A or B above).
Required Continuing Education Activities. In order to demonstrate continued competency in manual therapy, all MAPS COMTs are required to complete supplemental continuing education within five years of receiving their COMT Certification. Group I (Only 1 Needed)

- Be actively enrolled in, or Graduate from an AAOMPT credentialed Fellowship program

Group II (Minimum of 2 Needed)

We encourage you to act today to reinstate your COMT, which you worked so very hard to earn!
Although your COMT Certification expired on July 1, 2011, we strongly encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to reinstate your COMT by filing your Re-Certification Application under the Courtesy Grace Period extension. Don't delay, as August 15th is just around the corner.
Please contact us at 631-298-5367 if you have any questions about the Re-Certification requirements and/or the Re-Certification process, or if you believe you have received this notice in error.
